Remake of the Thai film Bad Genius (2017)
Plot
A group of 12th graders from an entrepreneurial high school band together to bring down a rigged college admissions system. There’s a scene early in the film where Lynn calculates the cost of her commute to the private school she attends.
SEPTA operates in the greater Philadelphia area
The film shows a stack of public transit tickets clearly marked with a SEPTA logo, which stands for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Half a minute later, the film identifies Seattle as the city where Lynn and her father live.
Bad Genius blew me away with its unique take on the heist genre
References Roots (1977). Instead of a typical bank or casino robbery, this film turns the world of academic exams into a high-stakes game, and the results are simply brilliant.
The tension is palpable from start to finish, and each scene seems carefully crafted to keep you hooked
I haven’t seen the Thai film it seems to be adapted from, but I like this one so much that I might try to find it and watch it too. I always like to compare how the same story is told differently from a different filmmaker’s point of view.
